Staff Accountant

Job Description

John Anderson Construction is seeking an onsite in Warren PA, detail-oriented and experienced Staff Accountant to support the financial operations of our growing construction and manufacturing divisions. The Staff Accountant will play a key role in the preparation and analysis of financial reports, maintaining precise records, and ensuring compliance with construction-specific accounting standards. The ideal candidate will possess an accounting degree, at least 10 years of experience in construction and/or manufacturing accounting, and a keen eye for detail. This role is critical to ensuring accuracy and efficiency in all financial transactions and reporting processes, working closely with the Controller/Office Manager and indirectly reporting to the President.

Core Responsibilities:

Financial Reporting & Analysis:

  • Assist in the preparation and accuracy of all financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, cash flow reports, and variance analysis, specifically focusing on construction and manufacturing operations.
  • Ensure timely completion and compliance of all financial reports with GAAP and company policies.
  • Provide detailed monthly and quarterly reports to the Controller/Office Manager for further review and analysis by senior management.

Job Costing & Construction Accounting:

  • Maintain accurate job costing records, ensuring alignment with project budgets and actual costs.
  • Oversee revenue recognition based on project milestones, percentage of completion, and contract terms.
  • Ensure construction project-related costs are tracked, categorized, and reported accurately, collaborating with project managers for review and resolution of discrepancies.

General Accounting:

  • Manage daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Prepare and post journal entries, ensuring accuracy and proper categorization.
  • Oversee the month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring all ledgers and accounts are reconciled in accordance with company guidelines.

Manufacturing Reporting:

  • Assist in tracking costs related to manufacturing, including materials, labor, and overhead.
  • Ensure proper accounting for raw materials, work in progress (WIP), and finished goods inventory.
  • Support the analysis and reporting of manufacturing variances and cost-saving opportunities.

Budgeting & Forecasting:

  • Contribute to the annual budgeting and forecasting processes by providing detailed financial analysis and variance reporting.
  • Work with the Controller to monitor cash flow projections and ensure alignment with the company’s financial strategies.

Tax Compliance & Regulatory Adherence:

  • Assist in the preparation and submission of tax filings, including sales tax, payroll taxes, and corporate income taxes.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax regulations, staying up to date with changes affecting the construction and manufacturing sectors.

Internal Controls & Process Improvement:

  • Implement and maintain internal control procedures to protect company assets and ensure the accuracy of financial data.
  • Continuously evaluate accounting systems and processes to identify areas for improvement, recommending solutions to increase efficiency and accuracy.

Team Support & Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the accounting team to ensure consistency in reporting practices and financial controls.
  • Collaborate with project managers and department heads to gather necessary financial information for accurate project reporting.
  • Assist external auditors during periodic audits, providing documentation and explanations as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance (or). Minimum of 10 years of experience in accounting, with significant exposure to construction or manufacturing accounting.
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting principles, including job costing, WIP accounting, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
  • Expertise in financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting, with an ability to analyze and present complex financial data.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in construction and manufacturing ERP systems (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, Procore) and Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local tax regulations, with experience managing multi-state tax compliance in the construction or manufacturing industry.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA or CMA certification.
  • Familiarity with construction and manufacturing software such as Procore, QuickBooks Contractor, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with inventory management and manufacturing cost accounting.
  • Advanced knowledge of tax codes relevant to construction and manufacturing operations.

Work Schedule:

  • Average work week of 45 hours, with flexibility to accommodate peak project timelines.
  • Onsite in Warren PA.
